Polly Pocket Toys

The Polly Pocket toys refer to a range of toys and accessories that are associated with the popular Polly Pocket dolls. These Polly Pocket dolls are a range of small plastic dolls and accessories which are made and distributed by the American toy company, Mattel. However the first Polly Pocket doll simply called 'Polly' was designed by a Briton called Chris Wiggs in 1983 for his daughter Kate. He even created a small doll house for the doll using a powder compact.

Bluebird Toys, a British toy company which was located in Swindon in England then licensed the concept and began to produce the Polly Pocket doll range which first retailed in stores in 1989. The dolls were named Polly Pocket dolls as they were extremely tiny and they came in small pocket size cases. Such was the popularity of the Polly Pocket dolls that the Mattel Company which distributed the toys in the US was very keen to buy over Bluebird toys and it finally succeeded in doing so later that year.

The newer Polly Pocket dolls that were produced by Mattel differed from the original dolls which were made by Bluebird toys. The original Polly Pocket dolls were no more than an inch tall and made out of a hard plastic, the dolls made by Mattel were two to three inches tall and were more malleable than the original dolls as they were made of a more pliable kind of plastic.

The Polly Pocket doll was then again overhauled by Mattel in 1999 as it introduced a new Polly doll which was more life like than the original dolls. It also introduced a Fashion Polly. Polly and her other companions like Lea, Shani, Lila, Steven, Rick were also transformed into plastic jointed figures that were 3 ¾ inch high and came with their own range of fashion garments and shoes which could be easily removed and put back on the dolls. In addition to the dolls many play sets and accessories were introduced into the Polly Pocket toys range which kept young girls entertained for hours.

In 2006 Mattel introduced a made for DVD movie called 'Polly World' in conjunction with its new magnetic Polly World line where Polly and her friends had magnetic hands and feet which allowed the dolls to be placed on any surface. However in August 2007, Mattel had to recall many of these magnetic Polly Pocket dolls as they represented a chocking hazard for young children who played with them.

The Polly Pocket Dolls have inspired a whole gamut of Polly Pocket toys that range from fashion outfits for the dolls to complete play sets like the' Polly Pocket Triple Decker bus', 'Polly Pocket Bubble Tastic lamp', 'Polly Pocket Mermaid Stars Water Wonderland Play set', 'Polly Pocket Light Blue Fashion Cruise' and the Mattel Polly Pocket Stylin' Sticker Maker etc. These are just some of the many Polly Pocket toys that are available on the market today.
