Steve Jobs, the chairman and CEO of Apple Inc revolutionized the world of MP3 players forever when he introduced a portable mp3 player called the iPod to the world on October 23 2001. The tiny mp3 player with scroll wheel controls was a run away hit and achieved iconic status in no time. Current estimates indicate that nearly 200 million iPods have been sold world wide since they were launched and the original iPod has been redesigned many times and the line has also been expanded so that the current 2008 line of iPods includes the following models:-

The iPod Classic

This model uses a hard drive and has up to 160 GB of storage. The classic iPod enables you to carry your entire music and video collection with you as it has the capacity to store up to 40,000 songs and 200 hours of video.

The iPod Touch

The iPod touch has touch screen controls and comes in three models with different storage capacities of 8GB, 16 GB and 32 GB. With the iPod Touch you can listen to music, watch movies, videos and TV shows as well as rent movies from the iTunes store. The iTouch is WiFi enabled so you can surf the web and check email with n it from any WiFi hotspot. Unlike the iPod classic, the iTouch and all other current models of iPods use a flash drives for storage.

The iPod Nano

One of the smaller iPods on the market is known as the iPod Nano. It is now enabled with video playing capabilities and it is equipped with a large display screen. The Nano allows you to play up to five hours of video or 24 hours of audio on a single charge. All this power is packed in this small wafer-thin device which has a 6.5 mm profile. The iPod Nano is available in six attractive colors. The Nano is available with a 4GB or 8 GB capacity .

The iPod Shuffle

The smallest iPod on the market has no video playing capacities but it is easily portable as it can clip onto your lapel or sleeve easily. It is available with a capacity of 1 or 2GB. It is available in four eye catching colors including the original silver color.

The iPhone

The iPhone also comes bundled with an iPod as one of its many features. This iPod is operated with the phone's touch screen controls. The current models of iPhones are available with 4, 8 or 16 GB capacity.

iPods are enabled to play many different audio file formats and they use the iTunes software to transfer music and other media from an Apple Macintosh or Microsoft Windows operated PC. You can also purchase songs and videos from the online iTunes store which is operated by Apple Inc and typicallycharges US $ 0.99 or £ 0.79 inclusive of VAT for a song download.
