Green Toys

The 'Green' ethos seems to have pervaded all spheres of our daily lives as we grapple with the harmful effects of climate change caused due the release of unregulated carbon emissions into the atmosphere. We now try to follow the principles of recycle, reuse and repurpose in all the decisions that we make and this ethos now also seems to govern the kind of toys that we choose to buy for our children. People are increasingly choosing to buy 'green ' or 'eco-friendly' toys for their children so that they are aware and conscious of the efforts to safeguard the environment from an early age.

These green toys or 'eco-friendly' toys are produced by a number of companies all over the world like Green Toys from the USA which manufactures all its toys at is home base in California, Under the Nile which makes its soft toys out of organic Egyptian cotton and Plan Toys which produce its green toys using methods which are 'green' and sustainable.

There are many different varieties of green toys that are available on the market nowadays these are:-

Toys made from Rubber Wood

All the rubber produced in the world is derived from latex which is sourced from rubber trees. When these rubber trees are fully grown and mature they no loner produce latex and hence they lose their value and are often destroyed. Toy companies are now using this wood to create innovative sustainable toys which are deemed organic as well because rubber trees are often grown without the use of pesticides.

Toys made from Bamboo

It is now believed that bamboo grass is a valuable sustainable resource as this bamboo grass grows very easily without much care or water. Bamboo is now being increasingly used as a sustainable material in home décor and in the manufacture of toys as well. An entire Bamboo forest can be regenerated in a span of three short years so it is easily replaceable as well. Bamboo is also light weight and flexible and can be easily crafted into green toys for children.

Organic cotton toys

While the cultivation of conventional cotton involves the use of harmful pesticides, organic cotton is grown without their use and is ideal for producing eco friendly toys which will not irritate your child's skin. Janice Masoud's Under the Nile Company produces toys and other baby products which are made entirely out of specially grown organic Egyptian cotton.

Recycled Toys

Recycled Toys are made out of discarded scrap like milk containers and recycled plastic. The American company Green Toys, which locally produces its green toys thereby reducing their carbon footprint, manufactures all its toys like tea sets and sand play sets out of these recycled materials.

Apart from the actual toys, manufacturers like Green Toys are also making packaging of their toys more eco friendly by using recycled corrugated boxes which don’t use any harmful plastics, cellophane or twist ties. These boxes are also totally recycleable and extremely earth friendly as well.
