Christmas Trees

A Christmas tree is a tree which is popular associated with the celebration of one of most popular holidays of the year– Christmas. Christmas Trees which are also known as Yule Trees are usually evergreen coniferous trees which are placed in a home or a store or even out in the open and decorated with many sparkling and twinkling ornaments and fairy lights for the duration of the festive season. Traditionally the Christmas gifts which are to be exchanged with friends and family for the holiday are placed under the Christmas tree until the morning of Christmas when these gifts are opened.

The origin of the practice of acquiring and decorating a tree for the celebration of the Christmas festival can be traced back to 16th Century Germany, however no single person or town can be credited as being the inventor of the practice of erecting a tree for Christmas. Historical records tell us that a Christmas tree was erected in the Cathedral of Strasbourg as early as1539.Towards the early 18th the custom of erecting Christmas trees had spread to the area of the upper Rhineland in Germany and by the 19th Century the custom had also become popular among the nobility and this practice had spread as far as Russia. Christmas trees were introduced in the UK in the early 19th Century. Nowadays Christmas Trees are a common symbol of the festive season which comes around at the end of each year.

The most common trees that are used for Christmas trees are fir trees; these trees do not usually shed their needles as they dry out and retain their color and scent as well. During the ages people used to source their fir trees from forests but now fir trees are sourced from tree farms where they are commercially grown for the purpose. Many people also tend to use several types of artificial trees for their Christmas tree needs. These are usually less expensive than real trees and also more environmentally sound. Moreover they are durable too as they can be put away after the holiday season and can be reused the following year. There a several types of artificial Christmas trees which are available on the market today many of which are made out of materials like plastic and feathers. These trees are available pre-strung with lights and ornaments as well.

There are specific dates for setting up and taking down a Christmas tree as well. Traditionally Christmas Trees were not set up before Christmas Eve and were not taken down until after the 6th of January,( the day that is associated with the 12th night) as it was considered to be inauspicious to do so. However with the commercialization of Christmas holiday, department stores all over the world have been known to now erect trees as early as October in preparation for the busiest shopping season of the year.

There are some Christmas trees which are considered to be iconic and are a tourist attraction themselves, one such Christmas tree is the tall tree that is erected every year at New York City's Rockefeller Center. The lighting of this tree is a special event which attended by many celebrities and is broadcast live on television. Another such iconic Christmas tree is the gigantic tree which is erected at London's Trafalgar Square each year.
