The cell phone which is also called a mobile phone is a device which is ubiquitous all over the world today. Most of us who use our cell phones daily cannot imagine how we survived before the use of a cell phone became almost a necessity in order to conduct of our daily lives.

These short range portable electronic devices send mobile voice or data communications over a network of specialized base stations which are called cell towers. In addition to voice communication many cell phones today have a host of additional services and devices such as SMS text messaging, MMS for sending photos and receiving video, music and video playing with built in MP3 players, Internet browsing capabilities and the ability to capture high resolution images with built in digital cameras.


The first commercial cell phone service was launched nearly thirty years ago in Japan by a company called NTT; now current estimates indicate that nearly half the world's inhabitants possess a cell phone. This makes the cell phone the most common gadget in the world.

There are several types of cell phones which are used all over the world , these vary from basic phones to gizmo filled devices like music phones and camera phones to all in one smart phones like the N series phones produced by Nokia and the highly covetable iphones made by Apple Inc. These smart phones are compatible with most modern day computers while they themselves function as mini hand held computing devices.. The Finnish company Nokia is the world's largest manufacturer of cell phones at present. Other major cell phone manufacturers include companies like Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, LG and Apple Inc etc.

The Canadian company Research in Motion manufactures a different kind of cell phone called the Blackberry which focuses on enterprise and corporate customer email needs and now has been upgraded to include many multimedia capabilities. One of the latest Blackberry models, the Blackberry Curve 8330 provides the user with a complete multimedia experience by integrating rich multimedia features like email, phone, organizer, camera, video recorder, Internet access, supported mobile streaming and GPS capabilities.


Cell phones and smartphones are continuously evolving with new models being launched daily but in recent times the Nokia N95 cell phone and the Apple I phone have caused the biggest stir in this highly competitive and fast growing telecommunications market.

The Nokia N95 cell phone has been described as the ultimate multimedia computer as it is composed of a 3G network compatible handset with which you can make calls, send texts and MMS, check your email and browse the web. The phone also has a 5 mega pixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics for photos and video clips and can be linked to your TV. The Apple iphone revolutionized the world of cell phones when it was launched in 2007 with its new touch screen interface. The Apple iPhone is a combination of three popular products a cell phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and an Internet communication device with email, web browsing, searching and maps. The company is now getting to launch a new 3G version of the highly coveted iphone in July 2008.
